New Superhero Pose Pack is LIVE!

Hello Fellow Creatives!

I just finished up my next pose pack. This is the 3rd set of 25 hand drawn poses with anatomy reference and basic shadows.  It is my goal to keep making these and hopefully help some of you with your own development along the way.

These are glorified mannequins and are meant to aid you in the process of experimentation and using a variety of poses. I am not saying these are perfect poses.  They are stylized and I take plenty of creative liberties with them.

As I explore more poses I find my own strengths and weaknesses along the way.  This will help me to grow as an artist but also give you part of that process to study from.  Think of these like a mini art book!

Separate Art Files are Included

In fact, with this 3rd set I have included all the poses as separate high resolution images to work with. That way if you don't have Procreate you can still find some use for them. They are all scaled to 4000px and in a JPEG format.

Creating Comics on the iPad Pro with Procreate - Inking Catwoman

In this video I show the interface of Procreate as I ink Catwoman. I am using an iPad Pro and Apple Pencil to show How to draw comic art.  I talk about some of the features that make inking in this program not only fun to do but very effective. I have had lots of questions on whether or not this device can replace a Cintiq and a desktop computer.  So I also touch on that subject as well.  In this video I talk mainly about how to ink cleaner lines and how to use the selection tool to create your fills. I also show you how to change your line color on a individual layer very quickly.

Creating Comics on the Ipad Pro with Procreate

This device is fully capable of creating fully finished comic art when using the program Procreate.  Not only does the software fun amazing fast, it is loaded with great features including perspective rulers, automatic video recording in 4K, one of the best brush engines I have seen ( and I have seen them all...mostly. ) and no lag even while working with large file sizes.  I don't claim that this will replace the desktop but it is getting really close and it surpasses it when it comes to mobility. Obviously. lol

Digital Painting Tutorial in Procreate on the iPad Pro

Here is a video tutorial where I show you a few tips on digitally painting with Procreate on an iPad Pro. I am using the Apple Pencil but this is a screen capture so you won't see that here.  But I do go over the process that I am using to create my digital painting in this awesome app.  It is great for drawing and painting on the go!

Monster teeth - Step by Step - Drawing and Coloring

Drawing Batman on the iPad Pro using Procreate

Here is a fan art piece of Batman that I did entirely on the iPad Pro with the software Procreate.  And I must tell you it feels very natural to traditional drawing methods.  I am now hooked with this device.  It follows me everywhere.  With the Apple Pencil I can sketch on the go and they did a great job with the battery life for both the iPad Pro and Apple Pencil.

Plus Procreate is no slouch either.  It supports exporting to PSD's which keeps all your layers intact.  It has some of the best perspective drawing tools that I have found thus far.  And it even saves a time lapse video with every drawing that you create.  For an app it sure seems like a powerhouse of a program.

So now I am doing my best to create full comic pieces and I will even start drawing some of my panels to my Blackstone comic on here next.  I was really just looking for a way to do basic sketches on the go, but the more I use it the more I feel that it may be fully capable of completing finished works of art!

Probably the best thing about the entire process is that it is so responsive.  I don't feel any lag whatsoever and the Apple Pencil feels more natural than any other stylus I have tried.  It also feels like it is directly on the surface versus some tablets where the pen tip has a small gap from the drawing area because of the screen thickness.

All and all I must give this setup a 9 out of 10!  I would give it a perfect 10 but Procreate doesn't open PSD's yet and it doesn't have primitive shapes which I think is just a tiny bit silly.  You can create custom brushes to get around that issue or download them.  But I think it they add a few more features this will be a lot closer to a desktop experience on the go!

Here is my latest mixed media digital art piece.  Spider-man swinging over a city scape.  You are probably wondering, "What do you mean mixed media?"  Isn't digital art just digital art?  Yes it really is but by mixed media I mean using various programs to execute one piece of art.  Some artist prefer to use only one program to create their art pieces and for some reasons that can be the best idea.  By staying in one program you can focus more on the work and less on which buttons or short cuts go to which program.  But I like to use more that one tool sometimes.  Mainly because certain programs excel in certain areas.  

For instance, this drawing started in Procreate on the iPad Pro.  I started there because I love the drawing experience of that device and because it has some exceptional perspective tools which I felt would really help me to create the cityscape behind Spidey.  Also I can move around when conceptualizing instead of being tethered to my workstation.  Which I think really stagnates creativity at times.  

Then for the inks I moved this piece over to Manga Studio 5 EX (also known as Clip Studio Paint Pro) which I still feel has the best inking brush engine in the business.  It also support perspective tools so that I can ink my perspective lines as easily after setting up my vanishing points of course.  I would generally add my colors in this program as well but there are just a few more options in the big dog of design programs, Photoshop CC.

So then I move my work over to Photoshop and add colors and post processing effects.  When it comes to colorizing your work and changing things like saturation, levels, lens flares, blending modes, and the list goes on and on, none of them seem to hold a candle to Photoshop. IMO.  And this all becomes relatively easy to do because each of these programs supports PSD's.  So everyone is pretty aware of who the big dog is in the pack.  But for some strange reason Photoshop lacks just a few choice tools at the moment.  Where the heck are the perspective features?  I am sure they are right around the corner but it seems like this powerhouse of a program would have already covered that base.  Oh well, for now I will just keep using them all.  I actually enjoy the process anyways. 

So that is what I mean by mixed media.  Really it is just me using a few programs together to get the best aspect/tool of them all.  Hopefully you like the end result.  I really enjoy creating this type of artwork with my digital tools.  So keep an eye out because more is on the way real soon! ;)

Drawing Spider-man on the iPad Pro in Procreate

So here is my latest drawing of Spidey on the iPad Pro using the program Procreate.  I must say I am really enjoying this tablet.  And Procreate is making the drawing process feel very natural as well.  With some of the best perspective tools I have seen and even a handy "Quickline" feature that I have not seen anywhere else.  Not that keeps the same brush effect anyways.  So this drawing was created with the new setup and I am pretty happy with it.  It still isn't as finished of a piece as I would do on my Cintiq but it allows me to create on the move and still get to a close enough rendering where I can touch it up on my desktop if I have to.  But really I don't think I would need to.   I like the rough

pencil look I get on this program.  Looks more like drawing on paper in my opinion.

Drawing Comics on the iPad Pro by Robert A. Marzullo

Here is one of my first sketches on the iPad Pro and I must say I am hooked!  Right out of the box this sucker performs really well.  I immediately jumped on Procreate because I had used it a few times in the past on my iPad Air but felt it was still a bit too rough with the plain stylus or my finger.  But the new iPad Pro with the Apple Pencil makes all the difference in the world.  I truly see myself switching this this device for at least 50% of my work flow.  Let me explain why.  To start I want to first say that I was saving up to get a Cintiq Companion 2 because I am huge Wacom fan which you probably already know if you watch my Youtube channel.  I love their devices BUT after reading tons of reviews I was a bit skeptical on buying the Companion. ( Which you should never buy a companion. You should fall in love with someone and have a meaning relationship.....oh, sorry.  That is a different type of Companion. lol )  Anyways, I am sure they are still amazing devices that will run full sized applications like Photoshop, Zbrush, Manga Studio, etc but I really just wanted portability and speed which the iPad Pro delivers all the way!  

The other amazing thing about the iPad Pro is the long battery life.  I can draw all day on that device without charging.  You get a full 10 hours of battery life with a full charge and the Apple Pencil charges really fast!  If you plug it into the iPad Pro for 15 seconds it gives you an immediate 30 minutes of use.  How cool is that!?!  It also runs flawless with no lag.  None that I can find anyways and I work with pretty large files when I draw or paint.  The other nice feature is that it is so quick to jump in and start working.  No boot up times and no wait.  That is huge when you are multi tasking like I am.  And very important when you are drawing comics and what to quickly sketch an idea down so you don't lose it.

Now most professional artist will say, "That all sounds great but I need a full working system to do what I do."  And for the most part you are probably correct.  But think of it like this, if you have to lug around a full computer to do every aspect of your work then you may need to trim some fat.  Drawing and painting should be a fluid process.  You don't want all this other stuff in the way of your creativity and that is what the portable devices are all about.  Not to mention, Procreate does an amazing job at being as powerful as Photoshop in a lot of ways.  It even saves out your work in a time lapse video, so for someone like me who likes to share his work on Youtube almost daily that is a HUGE plus!

Another thing that they got right is the Apple pencil's feel.  It handles like a real pencil.  One of the things that I never fully enjoyed about the Wacom devices was the larger stylus.  They just feel too bulky for a natural drawing experience.  The Apple Pencil feels just about right.

So can I see myself drawing my comics on this device.  Yep!  The inking is even awesome on this device. ( That will be in an upcoming video so be sure to stop by the channel. )

I am already drawing panels from my comic on this beast and then transferring them over to my desktop to compile them in Manga Studio 5.

In closing - Will this tablet replace my Cintiq and desktop, probably not.  Does it add a huge dynamic and functionality to my work flow. Damn straight skippy!  If you are like me and you draw for 12 hours a day then you would love the idea of taking some of that show on the road.  And this device is perfect for that! ;)
