Testing the Clip Studio Paint App for the iPad Pro

Clip Studio Pro App for the iPad

Here is a quick demo of the inking and coloring from the Clip Studio Paint app on the iPad Pro. I must say it functions just as it should. ( so far! ) Everything is extremely similar to the desktop version. Probably the most difficult thing to figure out was the import/export of the files. ( Quick note - if you are running Manga Studio 5 EX you can open your files on the iPad but not from the Clip Studio Version back to MS5. Just use PSD's until you get the updated software for your desktop as a work around. )

Really nice to be able to sit back on the couch and work on any of my fully layered MS5 files. Will definitely help with the Blackstone comic. That alone will justify the monthly costs I guess but still not happy with it. I just feel too many of these companies are trying to justify monthly memberships. I don't want to get on a negative tangent about that but I think they should do a one time purchase where you would either pay for major updates or a monthly subscription where all updates and support is included. Just my 2 cents of course!

I will keep testing this app out and let you know what I find and videos will be on the way. I must admit I am pretty impressed with its ability to run like a full blown program on the iPad Pro. I imagine others such as Photoshop will follow soon. I will also say that Procreate does handle the sketching process a bit better in my opinion but it is still a bit early to be sure about that. The inking and watercolor brushes on Clip Studio Paint are just as amazing as they are on the desktop version so that is pretty freaking cool!

Have a Happy Thanksgiving!!

Good luck with your art and more on the way! ;)

Digital Panting in Manga Studio 5 - Working in Perspective

Digital Panting in Manga Studio 5 - Working in Perspective

In this course I walk you through using the perspective tools inside of Manga Studio 5 / Clip Studio Paint. We first delve into the basics and the setup in one, two, and three point perspective. Then I walk you through the use of the  special rulers. A lot of students have expressed a certain confusion about these tools but the reason they are difficult to understand is because they have lots of options for controlling the perspective.
I demonstrate these tools and show you how to make them much easier to work with. A few programs have now adopted perspective drawing tools but none of them are as functional and versatile as these are. The special rulers alone are huge time savers for comic book illustrators.
After I run through the basics I think take you through the entire process of creating the image you see above. ( Scroll to the next slide to see the entire picture. ) The majority of this course is all in real time with only small amounts time lapsed in areas where I have already explained the process in real time and didn't want to bore you with repetition.
I also teach you how to setup and edit your work efficiently by making proper use of the groups and layers. As well as give you a better understanding of the blending modes.
By the end of this 5 hour course you will have worked through the entire image with me and learned what techniques I use to create my digital paintings.
With this course you get -
-19 Step by Step Video Lessons ( 5 hours of Narrated Content )
-City Scape Art File - Manga Studio 5 Format ( You can also request a PSD )
-Custom brushes that I used in this course
Like any other products you get from me on my Gumroad I am here to help you with any questions you have. I appreciate your support so don't hesitate to ask, and giving me feedback for future lessons is greatly appreciated!

Teaching Art Courses on Udemy

Teaching Art Courses on Udemy Image

Teaching Art Courses on Udemy

Hello everyone! Robert A. Marzullo here and I just wanted to give you all an update and my inside opinion about my experience with Udemy thus far. As you may or may not know I have been creating video courses for a few years now. I have created hundreds of Youtube videos and then got offered to work for Tuts Plus of Envato. I created about 6 full courses for their company for which they paid me outright for. I will admit the pay was pretty good but I no longer own those courses. They belong to Envato. Not a bad thing mind you, it did help pay the bills while I was creating them. That eventually ran its course when they started cutting back on art courses and I still had lots of ideas to offer so I started to look around.

I then made some of my own video lessons and uploaded them to a site called curious.com ( Which I do not recommend. ) Not a bad bunch of people but the return on investment for me was very small and they do not allow you to remove your content freely. They claim they are trying to protect their students that have already paid for the lessons but that unfortunately will lock you into a bad agreement if the return on investment isn't good for you and you want to repurpose your content. Which should be your right. It is your digital product after all. Oh well, live and learn seems to be my motto in life.

So while this experience was going on I continued to look for some better options. I started a Gumroad with my content and added lots of neat stuff for my Youtube followers, such as custom brushes and templates for Photoshop and Manga Studio 5. Some of those have actually done very well. And Gumroad has a pretty nice pay structure. They payout once a week and it automatically hits your account like clockwork. The fees are reasonable considering there is no actual operating cost other than production. And they do market your products somewhat. As people purchase similar products your may get recommended so you generate a few extra sales that way. They take an additional 10% discovery fee but hey, it's still an extra sale so I'm good with that! One thing I will note about Gumroad is that they have a free and a paid option. Be careful because the paid option goes up as you gain a customer base. Your monthly amount will increase as you get more customers to support. That can burn you if you are doing some free products to drive your customer growth. So do your research before going to the paid subscription model. Either way, I am still a big Gumroad fan. It has been great for my digital business thus far!

Here is my store on Gumroad - http://www.gumroad.com/robertmarzullo

I still needed to get more income and improve upon where I was at. Besides, I knew that if Envato was willing to pay me thousands of dollars for a course there must be some real value in what I was doing. Although my courses were selling on Gumroad, I still had to drive the main portions of the sales and that is another job all in itself. Setting up promo videos, blog posts, social media, networking, etc, etc, etc. Not that I don't enjoy that but I just shut down my sign business of 15 years to pursue art, not be a marketing guru. So I needed some help in the marketing department. That is what led me to Udemy. I researched a few others like Teachable, Skillshare, Thinkific and so on but they all had a few quirks that eventually led me to try Udemy. So I uploaded one of my courses on Udemy and BAM!! Nothing happened. I know, very sad. I was extremely hopeful and I really needed to make some financial progress. Storyboards illustrations weren't coming in as before and I was starting to think I needed a real job. So the next few months went by and I studied how to promote my courses and kept adding products to my Gumroad like a good little artist. Then I find out that it is extremely helpful to have multiple courses on Udemy. Which makes total sense anyways. Who wants to buy your product if you only have one product and very little reviews. Students want proof that you are good at what you do and that means more than one product. So I uploaded my next course and sales started to increase. Then I got some good reviews and sales increased again. I then got off my butt and did some promotional videos with course coupons leading to my content, and sales went up again. I won't talk numbers because we all need very different amounts to survive and be happy but I will say this, within less than a year Udemy is now my biggest income for my digital products. It now generates new sales every day without me lifting a finger. I am approaching 2000 students and growing every day as well as getting lots of great reviews and feedback from the students wanting more. So guess what, I am making new courses right now!

Now also take into account that I don't put all my eggs in one basket. I use a few revenue streams with my digital content so that if one or two start to decrease I can analyze what is going on and make changes accordingly. If it is something that is within my control. The wonderful thing about this type of business model is that you are now gaining income over and over again on the same product with no operating costs. And it is very sustainable because all content is going to video and digital books. You do have to continually respond to students and update your courses over time if you want them to remain valid in the marketplace but nothing is entirely perpetual without some force behind it. Nothing I am aware of anyways.

So the main thing I want to share is this, you can do it if you keep working hard and don't give up. Almost all things start very slow and need momentum to be successful. That is usually why most people don't make it. During that slow period we think of reasons why it might be failing other than how we can make it succeed. Look for growth even in small numbers because that will tell you what to do next as well as what not to do when the numbers decline. Just don't give up! You don't have to be the first one across the finish line, just make sure you get there!

Thank you for your time. I hope you found this information helpful and if you want to learn about art in the way that I teach it, here is my course coupons on Udemy -

Digital Painting Tutorial in Procreate on the iPad Pro

Here is a video tutorial where I show you a few tips on digitally painting with Procreate on an iPad Pro. I am using the Apple Pencil but this is a screen capture so you won't see that here.  But I do go over the process that I am using to create my digital painting in this awesome app.  It is great for drawing and painting on the go!

This is a fan art piece of the Demon Hunter Girl from Diablo 3. This is a work in progress but I wanted to share the process with you.  I hope you enjoy the work and let me know if you have any questions about this video!

Drawing Eyes - Various Expressions by Robert A. Marzullo

Hello Everyone! I hope all is well.  I just wanted to share some of my scribbles with you today! This is the way that I practice each area in my artwork.  I think by doing these studies, you can attack bigger more advanced drawings with a bit more confidence.

I pick a topic and draw a bunch of them to gain perspective on that particular thing.  This time it was eyes, next it might be buildings or animals or whatever.  It's funny how you go to draw something and you quickly realize it may not be the best aspect of your art.  You then have the option to crumple up the paper and go to your safe zone.  You know, the things you can draw without thinking too hard.  I don't like to give into that too much.  It's better to attack those weak areas head on.

So do lots of studies like these in your free time and you'll be glad that you did.  I always struggle with the bend of the legs and how the anatomy works in that specific area from various angles.  So guess what I will be focusing on next week!  I could just draw characters standing straight up all the time but then nobody wants to see a bunch of stiff super heroes, do they?

You can also see a speed drawing of these eyes here -

And remember if you want to up your game at drawing dynamic figures to check out
my course "How to Improve Your Figure Drawing - Step by Step" -

This course has had a very positive response and I am now working on a Part 2 where we will focus more on character interactions such as fight scenes, characters in motion, basic interactions, body expressions, posture, and much more!

So thanks very much for stopping by and follow me on Youtube for free video lessons each week!

Digital Painting in Manga Studio 5 EX / Clip Studio Paint Pro - Lesson 2 - Weapons by Robert A. Marzullo

Here is Lesson 2 of 6 in my course on Digital Painting in Manga Studio 5 EX / Clip Studio Paint Pro.  I begin this course with basic elements and work up to full landscapes and finally a character design.  This way by the end of this course you will have a full understanding of how to paint everything that goes into a scene and also how to break things down into easier to understand components.  Each lesson in this course will be $5 but some will range from 45 minutes up to couple of hours long.  So this will be packed with lots of great information about the program and it capabilities.  If you have any questions you can reach out to me at rob@robertmarzullo.com and I will gladly answer your questions for supporting my courses.  This is also streamable in full HD so you can clearly see all of the things that I am doing in this program.

In this lesson we will create the weapons concept art that you see above.  We start by creating the line art and then add in digital paint effects over top with layers and blending modes.  I will show you how to separate parts of your design to make the painting process easier to accomplish.  This second video is a bit more advanced than Lesson 1.  It is an hour and a half long and only the last 12 minutes are in time lapse with narration.  The rest is all in real time.  That way you can see the pace that I work at to create this type of art.

Keep in mind I am using Manga Studio 5 EX and I am also using a Wacom Cintiq  to create this artwork.  You can use any tablet you prefer but I want you to be aware of my setup.  You also get a high resolution copy of the artwork from each course and any custom brushes I make during this production.

Thanks for stopping by and I hope you enjoy the course!

Finding Inspiration to Draw by Robert Marzullo...

Hello fellow comic artist and art lovers. Here is an update into the world of Ram Studios. The Blackstone comic is being worked on when I can squeeze it in between commercial jobs at the moment. I have to pay the bills first so when a Storyboard job or a sign job come in, they get pushed up on the list. And poor Blackstone goes to the back burner! Sad but the hard truth of life. Which also brings me to the topic of this post, "Finding Inspiration to Draw!"

It is a very scary topic at times for Artist, Writers, Musicians, etc. How to get the creative juices flowing? Especially when you have to jump from project to project and style to style. What do you do to gain that passion for your own creative property at the drop of a dime? I am not going to tell you I have the magic potion but I will tell you my method for coping with this delimma.

First and foremost I read some of my favorite comics. I know that sounds pretty obvious but let me expound upon that idea. I go to the books that excited me to get into comics. For me it was the 90's. The art was at the top of it's game, in my opinion of course. The detail was amazing and some of the greatest artist were making a name for themselves and it really showed in their work. I was captivated by the intense detail they managed to squeeze into every panel. That alone set my art imagination a blaze. So I go back to that period in my life and reactivate that emotion to start. Secondly, I load in some good music and put on the headphones. Time to Jam!! I won't push my flavor of ice cream on you but I like Alternative Rock for  drawing. But different strokes for different folks so you go for what gets your blood moving. I think this is a big deal when drawing for long hours. It is too easy to become complacent so you have to get in the zone! Music does that for me. Third, I punch a kitten….J/k I would never pouch a kitten, unless he took the first swing. ( Then it is clearly self defense! ;) Third, if all else fails then I load up some good science fiction movies. Now keep in mind they need to be things you have seen a dozen times or you will find yourself looking at the movie more than your art. And that is 5th grade all over again. Scribbling in the back of the book when you should be reading it. I tend to watch movies that I can visualize just by hearing the story. I have watched Avengers so many times I can narrate the movie now. Now it's Guardians of the Galaxy by the way was Freakin Awesome! :)
So that is pretty much what I do to get the inspiration going and now my secret recipe for the motivation that also needs to be in the mix!

Here it is……the magic word………FAMILY! It isn't to be famous or loved by my peers. It isn't to have my work displayed in some fancy gallery. It isn't to one day to brag that I have a top selling comic book. It is to provide for my family. So I think of my baby boy Roman who needs daddy to put bread on the table. I think of my loving Jessica who puts up with my long hours of drawing. I think of my dear mother Rosa who always told me I was the best and to believe it. And I think of all my supportive friends that have had faith in me over the years. ( They are family too! ) All that combined give me fire to push and to excel. But all the motivation in the world still means diddly without the inspiration to create.

So there it is. I am not saying this is a sure fire way to get your creativity to ignite but this is my thought process on how I do it. There isn't anything worse that staring at a blank canvas and it staring back at you saying……Nothing! So give this a try or use this as a blue print with your own preferences and see  how it works. And if that doesn't work then one sure fire way to get things going is to collaborate with other artist. A convention will always get you fired up!

Keep drawing and keep having fun!
