Free Online Course for Beginner Artists - The Benefits of Thumbnail Sketching

The Benefits of Thumbnail Sketching - Free Online Course

Welcome Fellow Artists!

I am sharing a free course with those of you that are looking to improve their skills at drawing.  This course focuses on some of the fundamental drawing principles that beginners tend to overlook or realize too late.

This course will help you to simplify aspects of the work and stay creative as you sketch and search for ideas.  Just remember that the sketch is the life and energy of the artwork.  This course is meant to help you learn to take full advantage of that area of your work, not just rush past it!

You can share your work at any point of this course for myself and other students to see.  If I can offer any valuable insight into your drawing process, I will.

If you find value in this course let me know and consider signing up for future updates if you enjoy the content.

Thank you for considering my course and good luck with your art!

How to Draw Superheroes - Female Proportions and Suit Designs

How to Draw Superheroes - Female Proportions and Suit Designs

I just created a new Skillshare class to add to my next course on, "How to Draw Superheroes - Start to Finish!"  This will be just another part to the course that will be packed full of great information!

In this particular lesson we will cover basic proportions of the superhero female form. You will learn how I draw a turnaround of a character, then how to apply anatomy and a suit design. Breaking down the process can make it much easier to accomplish.

This can seem like a basic lesson but I assure it is a very important one to practice. Turning the character around on the page gives you a great sense on how they look from these basic angles. Then drawing them in more dynamic poses is easier to envision. Don't worry, we will get into all that advanced stuff later, I promise!

Get them on Skillshare!

If you want to give this class a look here is the link - https://skl.sh/2K8mb2w

You can also get my class on the male proportions version here -  https://skl.sh/2HCOOY2

Do you prefer Gumroad?

If you want to just buy this course you can get it on my Gumroad page here. Just please keep in mind that you pay for the full course now and get the lessons as they are completed. I will be adding new lessons each week until the course is completed.

Get it here - https://gum.co/zgpix

By the end of this course we will cover all the various techniques I use to create comic book heroes. Things like proportions + distortions of the body, dynamic anatomy, suit designs, powers, rendering/crosshatching, shapes of shadows, action poses, foreshortening, and by the end of it we will complete a full scene creation to put all that knowledge to the test.

I hope you will join me for these lessons and I am here if you have any questions. As always keep drawing and keep having fun! :)

How to Improve Your Creature Design Drawing - Step by Step - Now on Skillshare

Creature Design Course on Skillshare

_______________________________________________________________

How to Improve Your Creature Design Drawing - Step by Step

In this class you will learn how to draw a variety of creature concepts. I will walk you through all the techniques that I use to draw imaginative creatures every day. This class is good for traditional and digital artists.

You will learn how to draw various studies to improve your knowledge and gain inspiration. We will cover break downs of specific areas in the creature anatomy to better understand how their bodies work.

You will learn to draw and study the spine since it is the foundation of almost any creature you will draw. I will walk you through creating lots of different concepts in this class.

Here is a break down of the Lessons that are currently available -

L1 - The Spine Says it All - In this lesson you will learn why studying the spine is so important and follow along with me as I illustrate a few examples.(Run Time - 13:09)

L2 - Thumbnailing the Concepts - In this lesson we will thumbnail 11 different concepts. This is an integral part of the design process. By keeping the ideas loose and the sketches quick ( 5-6 Minutes ) you can express a lot of concepts to work from.  (Run Time - 8:54)

L3 - The Brain Box - In this lesson you will learn how to draw various heads for our creatures. We will talk about some of the differences that define predators and prey. (Run Time - 9:19)

L4 - Creating Variations in Your Concepts - In this lesson we will draw 6 creature designs but focus on making each one very different from the previous example. This can be a great way to stretch the imagination.     (Run Time - 12:00)

L5 - Animal Leg Studies - It is important to study various parts of animal anatomy to gain perspective on your creature designs. Here we will draw 3 examples from animals and adjust them slightly to look more imaginative.  (Run Time - 7:57)

L6 - Merging Concepts Together - In this lesson you will work with me as I draw 6 different creature limbs. Each will have at least 2 various traits mixed together to create the design.  (Run Time - 11:04)

L7 - Adjusting Proportions - In this lesson you will learn how to create a creature concept and then adjust the proportions to make a very different version of that same creature. This can be another very useful exercise in developing a unique creature design.  (Run Time - 11:03)

L8 - Project Ogre Thumbnails - In this lesson you will learn how to work from a script like a real pro does. This is a fun and important exercise to do so let's get to it. We will start by drawing out our thumbnails to this concept.  (Run Time - 17:02)

L9 - Cleaning up the Concept - In this lesson we will draw one more thumbnail and make our decision on what to keep and what to pitch. We will then start to clean up our sketch.   (Run Time - 17:08)

L10 - Refining the Drawing - Now the heavy lifting has been done and we will start to refine the line work and make it pretty for the client or our portfolio...or both!  (Run Time - 18:50)

Teaching a Comic Figure Drawing Class on Skillshare

Skillshare Comic Figure Drawing Class

I am now teaching a class on Skilshare. The current class if focused on Figure Drawing and Comic Character creation. I will be adding more lessons each week so let me know what you want to learn and I will make it happen! I want to teach some techniques for breaking down the poses and reconstructing them with confidence. My classes are more for aspiring comic book artists but they can be translated well for fine artists too. The same basic principles apply and a lot of what I will be teaching can apply to other things in your art.

I hope you find this content valuable and I am interested to hear what you think. There will be exercises to make sure you are learning what you need to. That is one of the things I find pretty neat about Skillshare. As well as the lessons being smaller bite size segments, unlike my larger courses on Udemy and my Gumroad.

Sign up for my Skilshare classes here and I look forward to helping you with your ART!! http://skl.sh/2nBoUec

Comic Book Heroes Pose Pack - RAM

Comic Book Heroes Pose Pack

I started my first Comic Book Heroes Pose pack on my Gumroad. These will consist of all of my favorite poses that I have developed over the years and a bunch of new ideas that I am working out. There will be action poses such as fighting, lifting objects, throwing, kicking, power poses and so on. There will also be a lot of the overlooked stuff like basic social interactions. Even things like sitting around drinking a cup of coffee. You need all sorts of poses to tell a well rounded story. ( You are also welcome to make requests on a pose you would like to see. ) This is just the start of this pose pack so get it early and get access to all of these as they are created and uploaded. The price will increase when the pack gets larger but for now you can get your copy at the bargain price of $3. You will get all the future updates included if you purchase now. The other benefit to this pose pack is that they will be organized for easy access. So if you find yourself in a pinch when constructing that next panel of art you can quickly reference this pack. These will be in a mannequin style drawing so that you are not hindered in your own creative process. I will include some anatomy shots but they are merely for you to study. This is not meant to replace your own drawing process but act as an aid to it. You can still jump on my Ram Studios Comics newsletter and you will get lots of free poses to work along with but they will be more gesture and style based than this pose pack will be. Join the newsletter here - http://www.ramstudioscomics.com If you want to try it out here is my Gumroad link - https://gum.co/UJaJe As always, thank you for your support and good luck with your art! :) Robert A. How to Draw Marvel Comic Characters Step by Step Tutorials

Spiderman Drawing Step by Step Tutorial
Spiderman Drawing Step by Step

Here are a few step by step drawings to play around with.  I enjoy practicing these characters so I figured I should share them with you.  I will be doing a lot of the more famous characters from Marvel Comics so be on the lookout and you are also welcomed to suggest a character you would like to see.

I will be sharing the images on my various sites and you can always watch my work on my Youtube channel at www.youtube.com/c/robertmarzullo where I created time lapsed videos of these

These are being drawing and sometimes colored on the iPad Pro using the program Procreate along with the Apple Pencil.  This setup has quickly become my favorite for my quick concept type rendering.  I still do almost all of my finish work in Clip Studio Paint on my Cintiq but almost all of my work starts on the iPad Pro with these types of sketches.

Hulk Drawing Step by Step Tutorial
The Hulk Drawing Step by Step

So if you like drawing superheroes like I do then this post if for you.  Like my Youtube channel, this is a way for me to improve my skills and share that progression with you.  I think drawing comics is a collective experience.  We all grow and thrive from one another.  So I enjoy participating in that process.

More superhero art is on the way so stay tuned!

Ram Studios Comics Website is now LIVE!!

I created a new website for Ram Studios Comics.  I needed an updated website that was mobile optimized since so many people use phones and tablets these days.  This new site is created with Wordpress so you can also comment on posts and give me your feedback.  The website is still a work in progress but I will be adding new content to it each week until it is done.  Then I will do new updates at least twice a month or as needed.

This new site will be an online portfolio for my comic and digital painting work but it will also be a resource center for aspiring artists.  I will be sharing step by step demonstrations in both image and video format.  I will create blog posts that will be to help educate artists on topics like finding work, completing projects, finding motivation, staying inspired, and ways to collaborate.  I am sure there will be lots of other topics to cover as the website evolves. You are always welcome to let me know what problems you face and would like to see covered.

You will also be able to get my custom brushes and art courses through my website as well.  And don't worry, if you don't have the extra money to spend there will also be free content on my Youtube channel.

So I hope you enjoy the new site and be sure to let me know what you think! Keep drawing and keep having fun!

Udemy's Black Friday Sale Started Today!

So Udemy's Black Friday Sale is here.  This is my first year being an instructor and I wasn't aware that this even existed a few months ago.  I mean we all have heard of the deals you get on Black Friday but I never knew that it was used in the digital learning platform community.  Now I know, and I guess it's a pretty BIG deal.

So just so you know what I am talking about, today all the courses on Udemy went on sale for $10.  Which for some courses that sell for up to $200 that can be a huge savings.  And Udemy does some heavy promotions to get the word out on this event.  Then viola, instant fat cash for the instructors.  Well, sometimes anyways.  It seems that the big heavy hitters do really well with this sale and some people don't quite make the cut.  Makes sense really.  Udemy is going to push the ones that have a larger conversion and overall success rate to maximize their profits.  You really cannot blame them for that.  Overall, everyone stands to gain more students in this process and students mean sustainable income if you are a good instructor that continually can put out great content.  It's the name of the game no matter what platform you decide to work within.  After all, "Content is King."

Now some might play the numbers game and just push out lots of product with low quality content.  And to tell you the truth, it probably would work with at least some small degree of quality.  You know the Taco Bell of instructional video.  ( No offense Taco Bell, you know I love you. ) And you really can't blame someone for that.  If they wan't to work twice as hard to push low quality volume then so be it! It's an open market place.  Me on the other hand, I would rather focus on quality over quantity.  But I am not going to not produce because there might be a better video course on the same subject matter.   Although I strive for quality I don't give in to the fears of not being the absolute best in the industry.  That is a sure fire way to slow and even kill your motivation.  You can be aware that people are doing something better than you but cannot let that hinder you from jumping in the game.  If you wait until you are good enough by other peoples standards then you may wait too long and miss lots of great opportunities.  Besides if you are like me then you learn by doing anyways.  So jump on in and get started!

So Black Friday is here and I not sure if I will get lots of amazing sales since I am still new to this game but I am hopeful.  There are three major sales of the year like this and some instructors have made claims that they make the majority of their income of theses sales.  So is you have some expertise in a popular subject matter.  Get to work and start sharing the knowledge.  The video learning platform has taken over and I don't see it going anywhere for quite some time.  Well, until they can download stuff into your brain like the Matrix!

I hope you found this helpful and here are some coupon codes to my courses for $10

How to Draw Eyes - Male Vs Female - Step by Step

In this video I talk to you about how to draw eyes for both your male and female characters.
I show you a few of my techniques for sketching and refining the eye shapes. How to spot flaws in the symmetry and fix them and so on.  This lesson was in response to a request so be sure to let me know what video topics you would like to see covered in the future.

I upload at least 2 to 3 times a week so be sure to subscribe to get notified about new videos as they are released.  I will be bringing my Live Streams back to Youtube as I wasn't too impressed with Twitch's platform. It seemed very glitchy and I think it better for gamers than art videos. IMO.
I believe it will be better to keep all my uploads on Youtube for now and sharing some premium content through my Patreon.

In this video I am using Sketchbook Pro 8 and a Wacom Cintiq to draw with.  I don't talk at all about the program in this one because I want it to be helpful for traditional artists as well.

Thanks for stopping by and good luck with your art! :)

Teaching Art Lessons Online with Udemy and Gumroad - My Thoughts on This Experience

As you may or may not know, I am a Storyboard and Comic Book illustrator. I enjoy creating images for nearly anything I can get my hands on. I recently needed to fill some gaps in my work schedule so I started teaching online. I started with lots and lots of Youtube videos and got my feet wet in the process. After some time doing that I was approached by Tuts Plus by Envato to start recording video lessons in Sketchbook Pro and Photoshop. Then after that ran it course and I started to feel the need to keep going I looked around for other platforms. I now teach on Udemy and launched my own lessons on Gumroad. You can view my page here - http://www.gumroad.com/robertmarzullo
I now have lessons on How to Improve Your Figure Drawing - How to Digitally Paint in Manga Studio 5 and so on. I even make custom brushes to help other artists create their work. It has been an extremely rewarding process and I am excited for what the future will bring. I am always an artist first and a teacher second but it does come with the added benefit of helping my fellow artists grow their skills. Which feels pretty cool!
If you prefer Udemy then you can get my courses here -

And you get to work in your pajamas, so that is pretty nice also! ;)

Drawing Eyes - Various Expressions by Robert A. Marzullo

Hello Everyone! I hope all is well.  I just wanted to share some of my scribbles with you today! This is the way that I practice each area in my artwork.  I think by doing these studies, you can attack bigger more advanced drawings with a bit more confidence.

I pick a topic and draw a bunch of them to gain perspective on that particular thing.  This time it was eyes, next it might be buildings or animals or whatever.  It's funny how you go to draw something and you quickly realize it may not be the best aspect of your art.  You then have the option to crumple up the paper and go to your safe zone.  You know, the things you can draw without thinking too hard.  I don't like to give into that too much.  It's better to attack those weak areas head on.

So do lots of studies like these in your free time and you'll be glad that you did.  I always struggle with the bend of the legs and how the anatomy works in that specific area from various angles.  So guess what I will be focusing on next week!  I could just draw characters standing straight up all the time but then nobody wants to see a bunch of stiff super heroes, do they?

You can also see a speed drawing of these eyes here -

And remember if you want to up your game at drawing dynamic figures to check out
my course "How to Improve Your Figure Drawing - Step by Step" -

This course has had a very positive response and I am now working on a Part 2 where we will focus more on character interactions such as fight scenes, characters in motion, basic interactions, body expressions, posture, and much more!

So thanks very much for stopping by and follow me on Youtube for free video lessons each week!

How to Draw and Paint a Woman's Face in Photoshop - Video Tutorial Set

Here is my next lesson on my Gumroad Page -

In this Video Tutorial Set you will learn How I Draw and Digitally Paint a woman's face.  This is a Step by Step narrated process.  This video is 3.25 hours long from start to finish and it is all in Real Time.  You also get the custom brushes that I used to create this painting and the PSD file with layers to study and work along with.

I go over many techniques in this tutorial such as using Layers and Groups to organize your painting.  Pressure settings of your brushes and what to be aware of when using them. How to adjust parts of your painting instead of starting over.  How to use the Liquify tool to fix areas of your work.  When to use the quick mask feature.  How to blend paint with the soft brush.  How to control saturation of parts of your image and much more!

The main take away with this lesson is that you can fix a bad image and keep pressing forward.  The start of this drawing was less than perfect but I kept with it and was able to turn it into a decent work of art.  I hope that you can learn from that experience and spend more time finishing your works and not throwing then in the recycling bin!

If you have any questions.  Feel free to ask and thank you for supporting my work and good luck with yours!

Discount Offer Code on my Gumroad Page - 50% OFF

First off if you are reading this and you are someone that has already been to my Gumroad store and purchased something, Thank You! It has really helped me to continue drawing, painting, and creating tutorials which I love to do. I am not saying it pays all my bills but it sure doesn't hurt. I have been able to justify spending the time that I do on Youtube making videos and replying to comments. ( Which takes lots of hours to do by the way. But I enjoy it! ) I like to help out when I can. It also has given me a guide on what is wanted and what is not.  Youtube does that for me as well but not in the same regard. As you know we will all watch something for free and sometimes we will catch ourselves watching something we don't even particular enjoy or care about.  Just zoning out on the boob tube I guess.  But, when it is something you pay for then you are much more likely to be committed to it.  You probably wouldn't spend the money otherwise.  So it really shows me what people are after when  they take my video tutorials or a full course.  Which is great because I need that direction some times.  Sitting in a basement studio thinking up ideas can be fun but it can also be mind boggling at times.  What thing shall I teach today in this infinite vastness that is art and comics?  Should I do yet another video tutorial on How to Draw an Eye?  Or should it be a full course on How to Draw an Eye on a Six Legged Winged Spawn from the Planet Nectar?  I would think the first idea would be more popular than the later but what do I know.  Maybe there is a niche in the market for the weird and absurd.  So Gumroad helps me to see that and you as the viewer help me to know that.

So here is my way to say thanks
When checking out anything at my store use the offer code -  50percentoffnow

And you will see the items get marked down to half.  And, follow me on Gumroad and get future deals.  I will be giving special offers to repeat customers.

You also get the image files from each lesson to study along with.  This course is 3.5 hours long with 12 lessons of breaking down the various parts of the body.  I explain how this process makes drawing the form much easier to accomplish.  Works for me so it should work for you as well!

If you have any questions then please leave me a comment on Udemy and a review so I can continue to improve my lessons.

Thanks for your support and good luck with your art!
