This is a basic cross hatching exercise that I like to do. It doesn't have much of the fancy line work that you see in hyper detailed comics but it still teaches you a lot about how cross hatching can work. You can be extremely messy with it and it will still show value in your study. I picked this character to draw because age gives you lots of nice shadows and shapes to work with and can be a bit tricky to get right. It is a lot easier to shade a character in grey tones or paint than it is to do with cross hatching. ( At least for me anyways! :) So I find this sort of exercise helpful and educational.
