How to Draw Marvel Comic Characters Step by Step Tutorials

Spiderman Drawing Step by Step Tutorial
Spiderman Drawing Step by Step

Here are a few step by step drawings to play around with.  I enjoy practicing these characters so I figured I should share them with you.  I will be doing a lot of the more famous characters from Marvel Comics so be on the lookout and you are also welcomed to suggest a character you would like to see.

I will be sharing the images on my various sites and you can always watch my work on my Youtube channel at www.youtube.com/c/robertmarzullo where I created time lapsed videos of these

These are being drawing and sometimes colored on the iPad Pro using the program Procreate along with the Apple Pencil.  This setup has quickly become my favorite for my quick concept type rendering.  I still do almost all of my finish work in Clip Studio Paint on my Cintiq but almost all of my work starts on the iPad Pro with these types of sketches.

Hulk Drawing Step by Step Tutorial

So if you like drawing superheroes like I do then this post if for you.  Like my Youtube channel, this is a way for me to improve my skills and share that progression with you.  I think drawing comics is a collective experience.  We all grow and thrive from one another.  So I enjoy participating in that process.

More superhero art is on the way so stay tuned!

How to Make Custom Brushes in Manga Studio 5 - Clip Studio Paint

How to Make a Custom Brush in Manga Studio 5                  Clip Studio Paint

Custom Brushes in Manga Studio 5 Image Alien Metal

I have been asked many times how I create custom brushes in this program so here it is. The software is a lot like Photoshop in the way that the brushes work but the interface is very different. Like anything else you just have to snoop around and find what goes where. One of the neat things about the brushes in Manga Studio 5 is that you can apply color to them as they are being applied. And not just one color but you can control the two colors that go into the design. That makes for some very interesting effects. Like the illustration above I was able to apple the blue of the steel along with the black of the inner shadows at the same time. ( Illustration on the left ) And the one on the right was similar but I applied the green glow as a post processing effect by drawing it in with a layer set to "Color Dodge."

These brushes were created using the ribbon effect in Manga Studio and if is very impressive once you get the hang of it.  Things like chains, rope, braids, alien tech metal spine looking thingies, whatever you can dream up becomes a lot easier to create. You spend some initial time creating the brush but after that you will save tons of time so it is well worth the effort.

If you want to know more then watch this video tutorial where I narrate the process step by step. If you have any questions or requests then feel free to ask. I am here to help! :)

Creating Comics on the iPad Pro with Procreate - Inking Catwoman

In this video I show the interface of Procreate as I ink Catwoman. I am using an iPad Pro and Apple Pencil to show How to draw comic art.  I talk about some of the features that make inking in this program not only fun to do but very effective. I have had lots of questions on whether or not this device can replace a Cintiq and a desktop computer.  So I also touch on that subject as well.  In this video I talk mainly about how to ink cleaner lines and how to use the selection tool to create your fills. I also show you how to change your line color on a individual layer very quickly.

Ram Studios Comics Website is now LIVE!!

I created a new website for Ram Studios Comics.  I needed an updated website that was mobile optimized since so many people use phones and tablets these days.  This new site is created with Wordpress so you can also comment on posts and give me your feedback.  The website is still a work in progress but I will be adding new content to it each week until it is done.  Then I will do new updates at least twice a month or as needed.

This new site will be an online portfolio for my comic and digital painting work but it will also be a resource center for aspiring artists.  I will be sharing step by step demonstrations in both image and video format.  I will create blog posts that will be to help educate artists on topics like finding work, completing projects, finding motivation, staying inspired, and ways to collaborate.  I am sure there will be lots of other topics to cover as the website evolves. You are always welcome to let me know what problems you face and would like to see covered.

You will also be able to get my custom brushes and art courses through my website as well.  And don't worry, if you don't have the extra money to spend there will also be free content on my Youtube channel.

So I hope you enjoy the new site and be sure to let me know what you think! Keep drawing and keep having fun!

Udemy's Black Friday Sale Started Today!

So Udemy's Black Friday Sale is here.  This is my first year being an instructor and I wasn't aware that this even existed a few months ago.  I mean we all have heard of the deals you get on Black Friday but I never knew that it was used in the digital learning platform community.  Now I know, and I guess it's a pretty BIG deal.

So just so you know what I am talking about, today all the courses on Udemy went on sale for $10.  Which for some courses that sell for up to $200 that can be a huge savings.  And Udemy does some heavy promotions to get the word out on this event.  Then viola, instant fat cash for the instructors.  Well, sometimes anyways.  It seems that the big heavy hitters do really well with this sale and some people don't quite make the cut.  Makes sense really.  Udemy is going to push the ones that have a larger conversion and overall success rate to maximize their profits.  You really cannot blame them for that.  Overall, everyone stands to gain more students in this process and students mean sustainable income if you are a good instructor that continually can put out great content.  It's the name of the game no matter what platform you decide to work within.  After all, "Content is King."

Now some might play the numbers game and just push out lots of product with low quality content.  And to tell you the truth, it probably would work with at least some small degree of quality.  You know the Taco Bell of instructional video.  ( No offense Taco Bell, you know I love you. ) And you really can't blame someone for that.  If they wan't to work twice as hard to push low quality volume then so be it! It's an open market place.  Me on the other hand, I would rather focus on quality over quantity.  But I am not going to not produce because there might be a better video course on the same subject matter.   Although I strive for quality I don't give in to the fears of not being the absolute best in the industry.  That is a sure fire way to slow and even kill your motivation.  You can be aware that people are doing something better than you but cannot let that hinder you from jumping in the game.  If you wait until you are good enough by other peoples standards then you may wait too long and miss lots of great opportunities.  Besides if you are like me then you learn by doing anyways.  So jump on in and get started!

So Black Friday is here and I not sure if I will get lots of amazing sales since I am still new to this game but I am hopeful.  There are three major sales of the year like this and some instructors have made claims that they make the majority of their income of theses sales.  So is you have some expertise in a popular subject matter.  Get to work and start sharing the knowledge.  The video learning platform has taken over and I don't see it going anywhere for quite some time.  Well, until they can download stuff into your brain like the Matrix!

I hope you found this helpful and here are some coupon codes to my courses for $10

Custom Brushes for Clip Studio Paint Pro / Manga Studio 5 - 50 Digital Painting Textures and Efffects

Hello Everyone!  I just wanted to put the word out that I am in the middle of a new brush set.  These are for the amazing program Clip Studio Paint Pro A.K.A. Manga Studio 5.  I was asked to do this set a while ago and like always, stuff ( meaning work ) seems to get in the way.  But now I am finally here and enjoying the process entirely.

The brush engine in Clip Studio Paint is fantastic.  It really gives you the most freedom to create amazing brushes that really do work.  So far with this brush pack I have been able to create some real winners that I can honestly say I will be using quite a bit.  Here are some of the brushes that will be in this 50 pack - Foliage brushes, power effects, fur brush, hair brush, tree bark, reptile skin, rock textures, cloud brush, rain, lightning, monster teeth, water effects and many more.  Along with some background patterns like hexagons and carbon fiber.

This set will help to save lots of time on various textures.  You will still need to add your own style  over top of these effects and these are not meant to replace your art as much as they are to help you grow and learn while creating.  I have already gotten lots of great feedback from other artists on this set and I will do my best to get your ideas in here if I can.

Keep in mind that right now you can get this set for $4 as a pre-release option.  There are currently 8 brushes available for download right now and more on the way.  The rest will be finished by the end of November and new ones are uploaded daily for you to start playing around with.  By buying it now you  get access to the brushes as they are created but when the full set of 50 brushes goes live the price will increase to $8.  But you will be locked in by buying early and get access to all updates to this set for free.

Here are some of the brushes and effects that are already ready to go....

This image was created using the hair, fur, and magic brush.

There are currently 8 brushes ready to use and counting.....

You can get your copy here - Gumroad Link -

You can watch a video of the foliage and nebula power brush being demonstrated here -

I thank you for stopping by and appreciate your support of my work.  It helps me to keep creating new brushes and new artwork.  For that I am eternally grateful!!

How to Draw Eyes - Male Vs Female - Step by Step

In this video I talk to you about how to draw eyes for both your male and female characters.
I show you a few of my techniques for sketching and refining the eye shapes. How to spot flaws in the symmetry and fix them and so on.  This lesson was in response to a request so be sure to let me know what video topics you would like to see covered in the future.

I upload at least 2 to 3 times a week so be sure to subscribe to get notified about new videos as they are released.  I will be bringing my Live Streams back to Youtube as I wasn't too impressed with Twitch's platform. It seemed very glitchy and I think it better for gamers than art videos. IMO.
I believe it will be better to keep all my uploads on Youtube for now and sharing some premium content through my Patreon.

In this video I am using Sketchbook Pro 8 and a Wacom Cintiq to draw with.  I don't talk at all about the program in this one because I want it to be helpful for traditional artists as well.

Thanks for stopping by and good luck with your art! :)

How to Draw and Shade Muscular Arm Poses - Comic Book Style - Step by Step

New lesson is now available on my Gumroad on  -

How to Draw and Shade Muscular Arm Poses - Comic Book Style - Step by Step
Link to these Lessons - https://gum.co/cBquj

In this set of videos I go through each of these arm poses with you.  I explain how to rough
out the basic pose, refine the anatomy, add the shapes of shadows and then we complete the
rendering.  I have been asked for these types of lessons many times now so I figured I better give them a go.  This particular set is 3 videos.  One for each arm pose.  The three videos combined are just over an hour long.  Most of it is in actual time but there are a few brief moments where I time lapse for basic fills or repeat instruction.  All of it is in full narration of the process.

This is going to be part of a larger course so there will be more lessons along the way.  This is your chance to get in on the ground floor and see the lessons as they are created.  You can also make suggestions about what you would like to see in the future lessons of this course.  I will be creating in depth studies of hands, legs, faces, feet, hair, suit/armor, and how to render different materials and effects.

This course will be a bit more advanced so if you still feel you are a beginner then please head over to my course on -

How to Improve Your Figure Drawing - Step by Step
Link to the Course - https://gum.co/dPDEp

In that course you will learn more about the basic construction that leads into these rendering techniques.

And remember that you get the high resolution art files with each lesson to study along with.
These lessons are not software specific and can be used by digital and traditional artists alike.

If you have any questions about these lessons then please feel free to reach out to me and I will be happy to help.  My information is below.  Thank you for your time and good luck with your art!

Creating Comics on the Ipad Pro with Procreate

Get my Custom Procreate Brushes that were used in this video here -
http://www.gumroad.com/ramstudioscomics

This device is fully capable of creating fully finished comic art when using the program Procreate.  Not only does the software fun amazing fast, it is loaded with great features including perspective rulers, automatic video recording in 4K, one of the best brush engines I have seen ( and I have seen them all...mostly. ) and no lag even while working with large file sizes.  I don't claim that this will replace the desktop but it is getting really close and it surpasses it when it comes to mobility. Obviously. lol

Drawing Superhero Women - Various Poses - Comic Style

Here are some more poses to study.  This is one of my favorite things to practice.  I always learn from drawing various body poses from either other artists or from life and giving it my own spin.  I think this is one of the fastest ways to grow your knowledge and perspective as an artist.  It helps to draw a variety of these so that you don't just jump right to the same static poses you have drawn over and over again.  Plus, the female body is so tough to get right in my opinion.  Very easy to get proportions wrong and make things look overly robotic.  As you can see with these poses I still have a ways to go but we all do.  I think no matter where you are in your figure drawing, you can still improve.  And if you don't see that in your work, then the game is over.

So I hope you enjoy these poses and I will share more along the way as I create them.  Good luck with your own studies and enjoy your journey! ;)

Teaching Art Lessons Online with Udemy and Gumroad - My Thoughts on This Experience

As you may or may not know, I am a Storyboard and Comic Book illustrator. I enjoy creating images for nearly anything I can get my hands on. I recently needed to fill some gaps in my work schedule so I started teaching online. I started with lots and lots of Youtube videos and got my feet wet in the process. After some time doing that I was approached by Tuts Plus by Envato to start recording video lessons in Sketchbook Pro and Photoshop. Then after that ran it course and I started to feel the need to keep going I looked around for other platforms. I now teach on Udemy and launched my own lessons on Gumroad. You can view my page here - http://www.gumroad.com/robertmarzullo
I now have lessons on How to Improve Your Figure Drawing - How to Digitally Paint in Manga Studio 5 and so on. I even make custom brushes to help other artists create their work. It has been an extremely rewarding process and I am excited for what the future will bring. I am always an artist first and a teacher second but it does come with the added benefit of helping my fellow artists grow their skills. Which feels pretty cool!
If you prefer Udemy then you can get my courses here -

Drawing Eyes - Various Expressions by Robert A. Marzullo

Hello Everyone! I hope all is well.  I just wanted to share some of my scribbles with you today! This is the way that I practice each area in my artwork.  I think by doing these studies, you can attack bigger more advanced drawings with a bit more confidence.

I pick a topic and draw a bunch of them to gain perspective on that particular thing.  This time it was eyes, next it might be buildings or animals or whatever.  It's funny how you go to draw something and you quickly realize it may not be the best aspect of your art.  You then have the option to crumple up the paper and go to your safe zone.  You know, the things you can draw without thinking too hard.  I don't like to give into that too much.  It's better to attack those weak areas head on.

So do lots of studies like these in your free time and you'll be glad that you did.  I always struggle with the bend of the legs and how the anatomy works in that specific area from various angles.  So guess what I will be focusing on next week!  I could just draw characters standing straight up all the time but then nobody wants to see a bunch of stiff super heroes, do they?

You can also see a speed drawing of these eyes here -

And remember if you want to up your game at drawing dynamic figures to check out
my course "How to Improve Your Figure Drawing - Step by Step" -

This course has had a very positive response and I am now working on a Part 2 where we will focus more on character interactions such as fight scenes, characters in motion, basic interactions, body expressions, posture, and much more!

Drawing Batman on the iPad Pro using Procreate

Here is a fan art piece of Batman that I did entirely on the iPad Pro with the software Procreate.  And I must tell you it feels very natural to traditional drawing methods.  I am now hooked with this device.  It follows me everywhere.  With the Apple Pencil I can sketch on the go and they did a great job with the battery life for both the iPad Pro and Apple Pencil.
Plus Procreate is no slouch either.  It supports exporting to PSD's which keeps all your layers intact.  It has some of the best perspective drawing tools that I have found thus far.  And it even saves a time lapse video with every drawing that you create.  For an app it sure seems like a powerhouse of a program.
So now I am doing my best to create full comic pieces and I will even start drawing some of my panels to my Blackstone comic on here next.  I was really just looking for a way to do basic sketches on the go, but the more I use it the more I feel that it may be fully capable of completing finished works of art!
Probably the best thing about the entire process is that it is so responsive.  I don't feel any lag whatsoever and the Apple Pencil feels more natural than any other stylus I have tried.  It also feels like it is directly on the surface versus some tablets where the pen tip has a small gap from the drawing area because of the screen thickness.

All and all I must give this setup a 9 out of 10!  I would give it a perfect 10 but Procreate doesn't open PSD's yet and it doesn't have primitive shapes which I think is just a tiny bit silly.  You can create custom brushes to get around that issue or download them.  But I think it they add a few more features this will be a lot closer to a desktop experience on the go!
Thanks for reading and more on the way real soon!

Spiderman Digital Art by Robert A. Marzullo

Here is my latest mixed media digital art piece.  Spider-man swinging over a city scape.  You are probably wondering, "What do you mean mixed media?"  Isn't digital art just digital art?  Yes it really is but by mixed media I mean using various programs to execute one piece of art.  Some artist prefer to use only one program to create their art pieces and for some reasons that can be the best idea.  By staying in one program you can focus more on the work and less on which buttons or short cuts go to which program.  But I like to use more that one tool sometimes.  Mainly because certain programs excel in certain areas.

For instance, this drawing started in Procreate on the iPad Pro.  I started there because I love the drawing experience of that device and because it has some exceptional perspective tools which I felt would really help me to create the cityscape behind Spidey.  Also I can move around when conceptualizing instead of being tethered to my workstation.  Which I think really stagnates creativity at times.

Then for the inks I moved this piece over to Manga Studio 5 EX (also known as Clip Studio Paint Pro) which I still feel has the best inking brush engine in the business.  It also support perspective tools so that I can ink my perspective lines as easily after setting up my vanishing points of course.  I would generally add my colors in this program as well but there are just a few more options in the big dog of design programs, Photoshop CC.

So then I move my work over to Photoshop and add colors and post processing effects.  When it comes to colorizing your work and changing things like saturation, levels, lens flares, blending modes, and the list goes on and on, none of them seem to hold a candle to Photoshop. IMO.  And this all becomes relatively easy to do because each of these programs supports PSD's.  So everyone is pretty aware of who the big dog is in the pack.  But for some strange reason Photoshop lacks just a few choice tools at the moment.  Where the heck are the perspective features?  I am sure they are right around the corner but it seems like this powerhouse of a program would have already covered that base.  Oh well, for now I will just keep using them all.  I actually enjoy the process anyways.

So that is what I mean by mixed media.  Really it is just me using a few programs together to get the best aspect/tool of them all.  Hopefully you like the end result.  I really enjoy creating this type of artwork with my digital tools.  So keep an eye out because more is on the way real soon! ;)
